What Are Crowns for Monster Hunterr Hunter: World

Gold crowns in MHW are awarded when you capture or kill exceptionally large or exceptionally small monsters. The miniature crown is for exceptionally small monsters, while you can get silver and gold crowns for exceptionally large ones. It's very easy to tell which kind of crown you've just received, too. The crown will be categorize alongside the size of the monster — either "smallest," if it's the smallest version of that monster you've ever caught, or "largest," if it's… the largest.

Getting crowns isn't necessary for any kind of story progression, or to unlock some kind of useful item! They only affect certain stamps on your Guild Card, as well as trophies and achievements. And if you want to obtain all the achievements or trophies in MHW, you have a long road ahead or you. These are easily the hardest, most grueling achievements to complete in Monster Hunter.

You need to get crowns for the trophies below:

  • Giant Crown – Record your first silver crown or higher
  • Giant Crown Collector – Record 10 or more gold crowns
  • Giant Crown Master – Record gold crowns for nearly every monster
  • Miniature Crown – Record your first miniature crown
  • Miniature Crown Collector – Record 10 or more miniature crowns
  • Miniature Crown Master – Record miniature crowns for nearly every monster

With six achievements dedicated to crowns, you have to go out of your way to collect them for most of the monsters available in the game. Also worth noting is that for the Giant Crown Collector and Master achievements, you need to get gold crowns; silver crowns will not cut it. Put another way, silver crowns are basically useless…

If you're trying to complete your achievements, or obtain the Platinum trophy, these crowns will most likely wind up as the the final tasks you need to complete. So how do you get more crowns?

How to Get Crowns in Monster Hunter: World

Unfortunately, a lot of getting the crowns you need is up to luck. You can't know the size of the monsters you're fighting beforehand. Nor are there any ways to manipulate size with items. However, you can do a couple things to speed up the process and hope RNG smiles upon you.

Event quests are very important for grinding out crowns in Monster Hunter: World. Events have monster match-ups and situations out of the ordinary. Sometimes size is one of those factors. For example, the special event quest for the Mega Man Palico set — "A Rush of Blood" — has you fight an absurdly small Odogoran, which will get you a miniature crown just for participating. However, the large Odogoran in that same quest sometimes only grants silver crown, so you may have to try elsewhere for the gold.

Check the official Monster Hunter event quest schedule for availability. In the meantime, here's a full list of quests in MHW with guaranteed mini crowns or gold crowns:

  • A Rush of Blood – Odogaron Mini Crown andpossible Odogaron Gold Crown
  • USJ: Gold Star Treatment – Great Jagras Mini Crown and Great Jagras Gold Crown
  • USJ: Blazing Azure Stars! – Azure Rathalos Mini Crown and Dodogama Gold Crown
  • Down the Dark, Muddy Path (Low Rank Arena Quest) – Barroth Gold Crown
  • Egg Lovers United – Kulu-Ya-Ku Gold Crown
  • The Blazing Sun (Special Assignment) – Teostra Gold Crown
  • The Proving (PS4 Only) – Anjanath Gold Crown
  • The Heart of the Nora (PS4 Only) – Deviljho Mini Crown and Deviljho Gold Crown

Additionally, event quests that have you enter an area to defeat four or more enemies (such as "Coral Waltz") have a vastly increased chance of spawning monster crowns. These quests can take a bit of time, and aren't guaranteed to give you the size of monster you need, but are still worth the trouble. Playing with a group of veteran players also hunting for MHW crowns will make them much, much faster.

The events rotate in pretty frequently, especially as part of greater holiday events that roll in tons of different missions. The crown quests in Monster Hunter are:

  • Deep Green Blues –Anjanath, Great Jagras, Pukei-Pukei, Rathalos, and Tobi-Kadachi.
  • Wildspire Bolero –Diablos, Barroth, Jyuratodus, Kulu-Ya-Ku, and Rathian.
  • Coral Waltz – Legiana, Paolumu, Pink Rathian, and Tzitzi-Ya-Ku.
  • Effluvial Opera – Bazelgeuse, Great Girros, Odogaron, and Radobaan.
  • Rock N' Roll Recess – Azure Rathalos, Dodogama, Lavasioth, and Uragaan.

Speeding Things Up with Investigations – MHW Crowns Guide

Beyond that, all you can do is try to make the grind as quick and painless as possible. Size is not determined by the rank you're playing, so you can opt to take Low Rank quests for some monsters. That way you can defeat them faster!

You can also take on very specificInvestigations. We haven't been able to confirm this ourselves, but the MHW community seems fairly certain that monster Investigations have a higher chance of producing Gold Crowns and Mini Crowns. Specifically, you want to do High Rank Investigations with at least one silver and one gold reward box (when fighting normal monsters). This also works on Tempered Investigations, but you need to make sure the mission has at least three purple reward boxes. Some players also say that taking on 15- and 30-minute Investigations increase the odds further, but there appears to be some debate about that.

From there, it may be a good idea to gather some friends and just grind it out — especially for Elder Dragons. Being able to communicate with others that know the fight can go a long way in making grinding more efficient, and just having someone to chat with can help ease the tedium.

And that should help you on your way to clearing some of Monster Hunter: World's hardest trophies! We'll be sure to update this guide as more monsters — and corresponding crowns — are released.
